Towards Zero-energy Architecture is a much needed call for the design professions to redefine architecture to help alleviate ecological problems. This book explores the theories, practices, and principles of new approaches to solar architecture that foster both design excellence and low-energy use.

Net-zero energy buildings, equilibrium buildings, or carbon-neutral citiesdepending on location and underlying agenda, the statistics vary. The variety of terms in use indicates that a scientific method is still lackingwhich poses a problem not just in regard to international communication, but also with respect to planning processes as a response to energy challenges. The clarification and meaning of the most important terms in use is extremely important for their implementation. Since October 2008 a panel of experts from an international energy agency has concerned itself with these topics as part of a project entitled Toward Net Zero Energy Solar Buildings. The objective is to analyze exemplary buildings that are near a zero-energy balance in order to develop methods and tools for the planning, design, and operation of such buildings. The results are documented in this publication. More than just a showcase presentation of select projects, the focus of this publication is on relaying knowledge and experience gained by planners and builders. Even if many questions remain unanswered, project examples that have already been implemented prove on a practical basis that the objective of a zero-energy balance is already attainable today.

Bij het voortbrengen en ervaren van ruimte is geen begrip zo ongrijpbaar als ruimtelijke kwaliteit. Velen zijn overtuigd van het belang ervan, als ze refereren naar 'leefbaarheid', 'omgevingskwaliteit', 'goede ruimtelijke ordening', 'genius loci', e.d. Verschillende gebruikers van de ruimte hebben echter ook heel uiteenlopende visies over wat een bepaalde ruimtelijke organisatie 'kwaliteitsvol' maakt. Het onderzoeksproject SPINDUS - geïnitieerd door drie universiteiten en partners uit de praktijk - nam ruimtelijke kwaliteit als onderwerp. Het putte uit drie ruimtelijke disciplines - stedenbouw, ruimtelijke planning en sociale innovatie - maar betrok onder andere ook antropologie, sociologie en ecologie. SPINDUS bouwde een 'metakader' dat een multidimensioneel en relationeel perspectief op ruimtelijke kwaliteit biedt. Hierin staan ruimtegebruikers, met hun tegenstellingen, belangen en conflicten, centraal en komen naast materiële en esthetische ook ecologische, sociale, politieke en culturele aspecten aan bod. Het Handboek ruimtelijke kwaliteit is het resultaat van dit onderzoeksproject. Het bundelt praktische methoden voor het benoemen, analyseren, evalueren en verbeteren van ruimtelijke kwaliteit. Het boek contextualiseert deze methoden in Vlaamse, Engelse en Italiaanse case studies die in samenwerking met 'stakeholders' werden geselecteerd en geanalyseerd. Diverse methoden komen aan bod: ontwerpgerichte, etnografische, planningsgestuurde, sociale, onderzoeksgebaseerde enz. Leerprocessen met ruimtegebruikers en een gezamenlijke definiëring van ruimtelijke kwaliteiten spelen in elk van de methoden een belangrijke rol.

For sustainable operation of buildings, energy-efficient systems for heating, cooling, ventilation and the supply of power are essential. Particularly during building renovations, modifications of the building services allow great savings to be realised at relatively little expense. The book "Sustainable Building Services" explains in compact, easy-to-understand form the most important system concepts and components. It documents how each of the technologies works and shows how they interact in overall concepts. The state of development of technologies of the future such as photovoltaics, heat pumps or solar climate control is also documented. The authors pay special attention to renovation measures and the optimisation of operational processes. 15 current building examples illustrate how building services are individually adjusted to different uses, building sizes and climate zones. L'architecte a un rôle majeur à jouer dans la résolution des crises écologiques et sociales qui pèsent sur ce début de siècle.
